- Heat insulation
- The microcapsules contained in OPTIMUS INTERIOR PAINT obstruct the heat from passing through the wall to the other side, keeping the room temperature warm in the winter, and cold in the summer, and by stabilizing the room temperatures, OPTIMUS INTERIOR PAINT saves the electricity by about 10% to 15%, contributing to the reduction of CO2 emissions.
- Air purification
- The photocatalyst contained in OPTIMUS breaks down undesirable substances such as nitrogen oxide in the air. It also breaks down volatile organic compounds such as formaldehyde and acetaldehyde, that could cause sick house syndrome.
- Safety
- Zero VOC: OPTIMUS is not only toluene- and xylene-free, but also its contents of volatile organic compounds (VOC) are all below 1% in terms of indoor concentration standard set out by the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare. Also, the surface of OPTIMUS coating qualifies all of the tests set out by the Food Sanitation Law, demonstrating a high level of safety. It is nonflammable (ISO5660).
- Staining-resistance
- OPTIMUS has a surface electrical resistance of not greater than 108Ω, preventing electrification, and thus, also highly resistant to dust and dirt. In addition, the photocatalyst breaks down the oil and tar that cause staining, and thus, keeping the wall clean.
- Deodorant
- OPTIMUS with the photocatalysts contained therein also absorbs and degrades ammonia (e.g., smell of rest room), nonenal (e.g., aging odors), acetaldehyde, and other undesirable substances that cause offensive odors.
- Mildewproofing
- The photocatalytic effect of OPTIMUS inhibits fungal growth. OPTIMUS INTERIOR PAINT keeps rooms clean even a highly humid place like a bathroom.
How is OPTIMUS ecologically conscious?
How does OPUTIMUS INTERIOR PAINT keep the room temperature warm?
OPTIMUS INTERIOR PAINT is jam-packed with a heat insulation layer of microcapsules of 20 to 40 μm. When OPTIMUS is applied and dried, the microcapsules cloak the surface to which the paint is applied, and obstruct the heat from passing through the wall to the other side, enabling to lessen energies required for heating in the winter and cooling in the summer, and at the same time, blocking off the air from the outside, and therefore, shutting off the cold air in the winter, and hot air in the summer.
OPTIMUS INTERIOR PAINT: Gentle to Human. What is a photocatalyst?
Photocatalyst is made of titanium oxide, which acts as an "environmental clean-up material", generating on its surface a strong active oxygen called the oxide radicals when exposed to ultraviolet rays from sunlight or a fluorescent lamp. The oxide radicals generated from such process are of "degradative" and "hydrophilic" properties, which keep the air clean by breaking down toxic chemicals that could cause sick house syndrome and degrading ammonia and other substances that can cause offensive odor (see the figure on the right). Moreover, the photocatalyst survives almost permanently, and thus, its effect is ever lasting.
Why do the photocatalysts of OPTIMUS INTERIOR PAINT react to the visible light region?
Photocatalysts that normally respond exclusively to the ultraviolet range are doped with a metallic ion so that they also respond to visible light of a range 400 nm or greater; by which, the photocatalysts of OPTIMUS respond to the visible light region. That means, any time an interior lamp is turned on, OPTIMUS coated on the wall removes undesirable substances that are stuck on the wall
Comparison of thermal conductivity
There are various photocatalysts with various characteristics; from which, 2 types of photocatalysts were selected; these substances provide a synergy effect with an optimal combination to absorb and degrade a wide variety of undesirable substances.
OPTIMUS INTERIOR PAINT would improve the thermal efficiency, and thus, does not require to set the air conditioner at, say, 26°C, resulting in reduction of the electricity consumption. A temperature of 1°C may be converted to 3% to 5% energy saving. For instance, the amount of electricity required for 1-hour air conditioning in a room of 16.5 m2 is 550 W. A saving of 10% electricity would equal to an energy conservation of approximately 440 W per day (8-hour use). (Calculated based on data presented on the website of Kansai Electric Power Company)
OPTIMUS INTERIOR PAINT was developed as a product pertinent to an industry-government-university cooperation.
OPTIMUS was developed under the support of Sakai City, and through cooperative efforts by Osaka Prefecture University, Graduate School of Engineering. The photocatalytic effect characteristic of OPTIMUS, which was developed based on the photocatalytic technology owned by Osaka Prefecture University, has been filed for patent protection, which is currently under review.
